Control of a Marx Generator for Charge and Discharge a Tubular Dielectric Elastomer Actuator

Tubular dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs), used for ventricular assist devices (VAD), have shown strong performance in biomedical applications due to their electromechanical properties as actuators, achieving large displacement. Integrating DEAs for medical devices requires a compact and efficient power supply module that can harvest energy for extended periods. Bidirectional DC-DC converters ensure optimal performance in powering DEAs. Therefore, a Solid-State Marx generator is presented, capable of operating a tubular DEA for VAD. This work focuses on validating the Solid-State Marx generator while operating a non-linear load (DEA). Such variations in the load are due to electro-mechanical dependencies, which affect its electrical characteristics, i.e., capacitance and resistance. Furthermore, the functionality aligns with VAD, featuring operating frequency of about 1 Hz, a stepping voltage over a total rising/falling time of 40 ms, and ability to operate across a 0–5 kV range.
