Grim raindrop: A translating solution to curve diffusion flow
We show the existence of a properly immersed translating solution to curve diffusion flow in the plane. Curve diffusion flow is a higher order version of curve shortening flow, namely <disp-formula content-type="math/mathml"> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" alttext="left-parenthesis StartFraction d upper X Over d t EndFraction right-parenthesis Superscript up-tack Baseline equals minus kappa Subscript s s Baseline upper N period"> <mml:semantics> <mml:mrow> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi> <mml:mi>X</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi> <mml:mi>t</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:mfrac> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mo> ⊥ </mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mo> − </mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi> κ </mml:mi> <mml:mrow class="MJX-TeXAtom-ORD"> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> <mml:mi>s</mml:mi> </mml:mrow> </mml:msub> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> <mml:mo>.</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\begin{equation*} \left ( \frac {dX}{dt}\right ) ^{\perp }=-\kappa _{ss}N. \end{equation*}</mml:annotation> </mml:semantics> </mml:math> </disp-formula>
