Proposing evidence-based STEM curriculum framework for Latinx student success through meta-synthesis of effective interventions

This meta-synthesis critically examines curriculum elements from 23 peer-reviewed articles focusing on successful STEM interventions for Latinx students. Building on our previous systematic literature review of 196 articles on Latinx engagement in STEM, we concentrated on 23 interventions that demonstrated positive outcomes. Using van den Akker’s curricular framework, we analyzed rationale, objectives, content, learning activities, and other key components across these curricula. Our goal was to identify recurring themes, innovative approaches, and crucial nuances that contribute to these interventions’ effectiveness in supporting Latinx students’ STEM engagement and achievement. Through interpretive synthesis of these findings, we aimed to propose a comprehensive model of STEM curriculum design, called LaSTEM (Latinx-affirming STEM) curriculum, that addresses the unique needs and leverages the strengths of Latinx learners. This proposed curriculum framework offers educators, curriculum developers, and policymakers evidence-based insights to enhance STEM education for Latinx students, addressing issues of equity and representation in STEM fields. Our findings inform a curricular blueprint integrating successful strategies from various interventions, offering a roadmap for creating more inclusive and effective STEM educational experiences. While the LaSTEM model was specifically developed for Latinx students’ STEM success, its evidence-based foundation proposes broadly applicable principles, with culturally specific elements adapted to meet other racial and ethnic groups’ needs, making this proposed framework a valuable template for creating inclusive STEM curricula across diverse populations. This work contributes to ongoing efforts to increase diverse participation and sutccess in STEM through culturally responsive pedagogical approaches that maintain significance for Latinx students while offering adaptable strategies for underrepresented groups.
