Cerium‐Based Catalysts for Hydrogen Production Toward Clean Energy Applications
ABSTRACT Ceria (CeO 2 ) has become a highly effective catalytic material because of its reversible Ce 3 ⁺/Ce⁴⁺ redox cycling, exceptional oxygen storage capacity, and structural stability. CeO 2 ‐based catalysts have developed over the past few decades, starting with their first uses in automobile emissions management and expanding to a variety of energy‐related processes, such as the hydrocarbon steam and dry reforming, water‐gas shift, and hydrogen production from boron compounds. Ceria has been extensively researched for its catalytic behavior in a variety of heterogeneous processes when it is combined with trace metals, metallic particles, or mixed support systems. Furthermore, ceria's distinct redox characteristics and structural imperfections make it desirable for targeted hydrogen production. The present review gives a brief overview of the usage of catalytic materials based on ceria for the production of commercial hydrogen through the water‐gas shift reaction, boron compounds and hydrocarbon steam reforming methods. Primarily, we present the fundamental structural characteristics of the ceria material that give rise to the catalytic activity it exhibits in the current applications.
