Science Mapping of Corpus-Based Translation and Interpreting Studies: Trends and Future Directions

Abstract Corpus-based approaches have become central to translation and interpreting studies, offering new insights into linguistic patterns and research trends. This study aimed to identify research trends and emerging themes in the field through bibliometric analysis. Using co-citation and co-word analyses of 1,444 English-language articles from the Web of Science Core Collection, the study revealed three major intellectual clusters and five main thematic areas, demonstrating both the depth and diversity of ongoing scholarship. The results show that foundational theories, translation universals, and methodological innovations continue to shape the intellectual structure of the field, whereas co-word mapping uncovers dynamic growth in areas such as audiovisual translation, contrastive linguistics, and discourse analysis. Strong interconnections between the translation and interpreting domains were observed, along with a notable rise in research focused on technology integration, multimodal analysis, and emerging interdisciplinary topics. The findings highlight strong interdisciplinary linkages, growing attention to technology and multimodality, and increasing convergence between translation and interpreting research. These results offer a structured roadmap for future inquiry and emphasize the value of corpus-driven methodologies in both theory development and professional practice. Therefore, this study provides an integrated overview that advances our understanding and guides future research on corpus-based translation and interpreting studies.
