Multipolar transitions excited by twisted photons in heavy quarkonia

Abstract In this study, we investigate the excitation of multipole transitions in quarkonium systems by high-energy photons carrying orbital angular momentum. We derive explicit expressions for the amplitude and probability of photoexcitation incorporating the dynamics of the quarkonium center of mass. It is shown that the leading contribution to the transitions induced by twisted photons comes from the multipole $$j=|m_\gamma |$$ j = | m γ | and $$m_\gamma =l'-l$$ m γ = l ′ - l in the long-wave approximation.
