Ceramic Nanofiber-Based Thermal Insulating Materials for Martian Exploration Spacesuits

Here, we report on a thermal insulation mat based on ceramic nanofibers. Ceramic nanofibers were made using electrospinning techniques. The nanofibers were characterized via scanning electron microscopic imaging and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The nanofibrous membranes add flexibility and high-temperature stability, improving thermal insulation properties. This paper will present electrospinning parameters, ceramic compositions, and mechanical and thermal properties. Based on the physical properties of ceramic mats, their suitability to meet NASA's goal of developing materials that can be used in a Mars Environmental Protection Garment was demonstrated.

Abstract

The nanofibers were characterized via scanning electron microscopic imaging and powder X-ray diffraction analysis. The nanofibrous membranes add flexibility and high-temperature stability, improving thermal insulation properties. This paper will present electrospinning parameters, ceramic compositions, and mechanical and thermal properties. Based on the physical properties of ceramic mats, their suitability to meet NASA's goal of developing materials that can be used in a Mars Environmental Protection Garment was demonstrated.
