Benefits of Mechanical Regulation in Pressurized Gas Systems

Mechanical pressure regulators and electronic bang-bang pressure control are both well-established methods for managing gas pressure in aerospace applications. While both methods provide reliable pressure control, each has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Mechanical regulators are highly reliable devices that offer smooth, consistent pressure regulation at a specific setpoint. Due to their lack of electrical components, mechanical regulators are lighter, cheaper, and more reliable than electronic bang-bang controllers, albeit with reduced flexibility. In contrast, electronic bang-bang controllers offer significant flexibility for applications requiring multiple pressure setpoints or large variations in operating conditions. However, bang-bang pressure regulation results in an oscillating output pressure, which may not be suitable for certain applications. A comprehensive study was undertaken to compare the performance of industry-standard mechanical pressure regulators and electronic bang-bang pressure controllers across various aerospace applications. The study focused on key parameters including reliability, mass, cost, performance, and flexibility. The results of the study can be used to help guide the selection of pressure control components for various applications. The study findings were incorporated into a prototype mechanical regulator with resultant test data reported herein.
