Resonance modal analysis-based siting strategy for passive power filters in distribution networks

• RMA based siting strategy for PPFs. • ST, SD PPFs. • Design by Q f , h n and m . • Constraint by THD V , N and HD Vh , N . We present a novel strategy for passive filter siting based on harmonic resonance modal analysis. The primary objective is to quickly design a set of filters that can reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the voltage in a harmonic-polluted power distribution system. Given the difficulty of identifying the source and impact of harmonic resonance in passive filter placement decisions, we employ harmonic resonance modal analysis to determine the optimal filter placement based on specific resonance influences. In contrast to the common placement selection strategy, this approach can minimise the specific system harmonic resonance and reduce the impact of harmonics. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed strategy is demonstrated using IEEE-33 and IEEE-18 Bus test systems. In the IEEE-33 Bus system, the proposed strategy reduced the maximum voltage THD at bus 16 from 7.16 % to 3.22 %, an improvement of 3.94 % before passive power filter installation. In the IEEE-18 Bus system, the overall maximum voltage THD decreased from 8.13 % to 3.55 %. Moreover, the proposed strategy addresses the complicated calculation process of algorithm-based approaches and provides a fast and efficient method for determining filter locations and parameters for a static distribution system.
