A review of Raman-based pressure sensors for in situ high-pressure and -temperature experiments

• Systematically reviewing eight Raman-based pressure sensors. • Expanding validated P–T limits for quartz and zircon sensors. • Providing an Excel-based calculator for rapid pressure determination. Raman-based pressure sensors are indispensable for in situ pressure determination in high-pressure and -temperature ( P – T ) experiments. This study compiled and analyzed calibration methods for commonly used Raman pressure sensors, including quartz, zircon, anhydrite, barite, calcite, dolomite, berlinite and cubic boron nitride. We systematically presented the P – T dependent shift of Raman band of each sensor. In particular, we extended the P – T ranges that quartz and zircon can be used as pressure sensors. The calculation methods of these pressure sensors were compiled in an Excel file as a Supplementary material, which facilitates researches to calculate pressures based on the measured Raman peak positions of relative pressure sensors. This work also discussed the applications and limitations of pressure sensors in high P – T experiments and microthermometry of fluid inclusions.
