The Position of Patriotism in the Gazeta Wyborcza Daily Following the Collapse of the Socialist System

The purpose of the article is to discuss patriotism as presented by the journalists of Gazeta Wyborcza after the collapse of the socialist system. The review article was prepared based on an analysis of texts that appeared in the period between 8th May and 31st December 1989 as well as 8th May and 31st December 2024. These texts were identified by searching for the word “patriotism” in publications that appeared in the journal during the period between 1990–2000, as well as by reviewing the titles of publications released in the journal before 1st January 2025. The study employed content analysis of the newspaper as well as linguistic analysis. On the pages of Gazeta Wyborcza – since its inception – there have been articles and comments published on the topic of patriotism. The publications express a growing tendency to question independence-oriented and Catholic patriotism. Gazeta Wyborcza focuses on civic patriotism.
