The Integration of Green Sustainability Into Supplier Selection: Perspective of Grounded Theory

ABSTRACT The drivers and enablers of incorporating green sustainability into the supplier selection process are investigated in this study. Using a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) approach, the study aims to develop a theoretical framework that highlights the underlying factors that influence supplier selection in line with green sustainability principles. The findings reveal that organizational, market, and enrollment drivers are critical factors that promote the practice of green supplier selection. Further analysis identified key enabling factors that enhance these drivers. The enablers identified in the study include training and education, adherence to regulatory policies, internal organizational shift, and collaboration/partnership. The study addresses a critical gap in understanding how public institutions tackle the intricacies of supplier selection in the effort to promote environmental sustainability. This study is original in its application of the grounded theory methodology, which allows for the development of a theory based on qualitative data rather than relying on a preconceived framework. By focusing on the drivers and enablers of the selection of green suppliers, the study provides a nuanced insight into both the practical and theoretical aspects of the integration of sustainability.
