Antibacterial and Anti-adherence Properties of Orthodontic Wire Coated with Silicone Carbide Nanoparticles: An Invitro study.
Background: Bacterial biofilm accumulation on the orthodontic devices surfaces may results in several negative outcomes during orthodontic fixed treatment like white spot lesions periodontitis and Dental caries which may lower the success of the orthodontic treatment. Nanotechnology is an actively growing field which enhanced several dental materials properties. This study aims to investigate the antibacterial and antiadherent behavior of orthodontic stainless steel arch wires coated with nano particles of Silicon carbide .Materials and Methods: 120 specimens of stainless steel wires were subdivided into two groups 60 each. First group was the coated with Nano particles of silicon carbide the other group was not coated and considered as control group. Each group was divided into two groups to be tested with Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 individually for antibacterial and antiadherent behavior. Another 12 specimens were used for a pilot study using inhibition zone test. Coating was obtained by magnetron sputtering technique. Results: Coated wires showed significant inhibition of bacterial growth and bacterial adherence more than uncoated wires (p value <0.0001). Conclusion: Sic nanocoating of stainless steel archwires enhanced the antibacterial and antiadherent properties of the wires.
