Effect of Gender on Perception of Smile Attractiveness Using the Diagram of Facial Aesthetics References

Background: The purpose of the study was to investigate Effect of gender (of the study raters on the perception of smile attractiveness with variations in upper lip smile line (UL) of Diagram of Facial Aesthetics References (DFAR).Methodology: The frontal smile photographs of a male and a female model were digitally altered to reproduce variants of upper smile line of the DFAR index; Upper lip smile line (UL), A total of 288 study participants evaluated the altered images through an anonymous online questionnaire on Google forms using a linear scale (1-10).Results: No statistically significant difference was found between the rating scores of female and male participants for the 3 variants of upper lip smile line in both female and male model images. Conclusions: Upper lip smile line and its relation to the amount of upper incisors exposure and hence the amount of gingival diplay is an important part of smile aesthetics
