The Active Efficiency of a Functional Beverage Extracted From Sadab (Ruta graveolens) and Kurchi (Holarrhena antidysenterica) Against Helicobacter pylori Bacteria

Medicinal plants represent promising sources of safe, natural agents that can complement antibiotic therapy against Helicobacter pylori. This study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-H. pylori activities of aqueous extracts from Ruta graveolens (sadab) and Holarrhena antidysenterica (kurchi) to formulate a functional beverage with good sensory acceptance. The extracts were analyzed for their phytochemical content (phenolics and flavonoids), antioxidant capacity, biological activities (antimicrobial, anti-H. pylori, antibiofilm, anti-hemolytic), cytotoxicity, and sensory quality. Sadab exhibited higher levels of phenolics and flavonoids, as well as greater antioxidant and antibacterial activity, than Kurchi. Both extracts displayed potent bactericidal action at low concentrations, suppressed H. pylori biofilm and hemolysin formation by more than 90%, and maintained cell viability above 90% in normal fibroblasts, confirming good in-vitro safety. Sensory evaluation identified the most acceptable beverage formulations at 0.50% for sadab and 0.75% for kurchi. These findings demonstrate the potential of sadab and kurchi as safe, plant-based ingredients for developing functional beverages with anti-H. pylori and antioxidant benefits, supporting further in vivo and formulation studies.
