Microleakage of Cerec Tessera milled crowns in comparison to IPS Emax CAD crowns.
Background: One of the factors influencing the clinical success of ceramic restorations is microleakage. Microleakage occurs when the luting agent is exposed to the oral environment causing its dissolution, followed by caries, microleakage and finally failure of the restoration. Limited data is available in regards to evaluating the microleakage of Cerec Tessera milled crowns in comparison to IPS Emax CAD crowns. Aim of the study: To assess the microleakage of Cerec Tessera crowns in comparison to IPS Emax CAD crowns. Materials and methods: Ten ceramic crowns were constructed using the CAD/CAM system and divided randomly into two equal groups according to the type of ceramic material. Group E: IPS Emax CAD crowns (n=5), while group T: Cerec Tessera crowns (n=5). Each crown was cemented to its corresponding natural molar tooth with Totalcem resin cement. The microleakage assessment was measured by samples immersion in 0.5% basic fuschin dye for 48 hours at 37℃. After the dye penetration, the crowns were sectioned vertically in a bucco-lingual direction by Isomet Saw to measure microleakage using stereomicroscope at 10X magnification. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test to compare between the two groups. Results: There was no significant difference between the microleakage scores of the two tested groups. (P-value = 0.389, Effect size = 0.548) Conclusion: Similarity in the microleakage scores were observed with Cerec Tessera and IPS emax CAD crowns.
