Climatic Design Strategies for Urban Open Spaces in Egypt: A Systematic Review of Studies Across Climatic Regions in Egypt | استراتيجيات التصميم المناخى للفراغات الحضرية المفتوحة: مراجعة منهجية للدراسات عبر الأقاليم المناخية فى مصر
This systematic review aims to analyze academic literature on the design of urban open spaces in Egypt, with a focus on climatic design strategies to enhance thermal comfort under regional climatic variability. The study involved a systematic review of 292 papers, from which 50 were selected through rigorous screening criteria for in-depth analysis. The findings reveal that vegetation and shading structures are the most effective elements in reducing surface temperatures and thermal indices by up to 25 °C, with performance influenced by tree density and urban canyon orientation. Water features were found to provide limited cooling effects, which are significantly enhanced when combined with vegetation, while urban morphology plays a crucial role in improving local microclimatic conditions. The review highlights the limitations of the Köppen–Geiger classification in capturing Egypt’s climatic diversity, as it categorizes the country within the arid–hot region without distinguishing between its northern, central, and southern zones. Accordingly, the results call for the development of a more accurate, context-specific climatic classification, and for strengthening climate-related studies to cover Egypt’s diverse regions. The review also emphasizes the necessity of adopting an integrated, context-sensitive design approach that combines climatic strategies with social factors, while prioritizing field studies alongside computational tools and simulations. Ultimately, the study concludes that integrating shading, vegetation, water features, and urban morphology is a key pathway toward achieving sustainable public open spaces and improving urban quality of life in Egypt.
