Mental Health and Neurotransmitters: Chemical basics-An Updated Review

Background: Neurotransmitters are the brain's fundamental chemical messengers, governing neuronal communication and underpinning all aspects of cognition, emotion, and behavior. The intricate balance between key systems—such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA, glutamate, and norepinephrine—is crucial for mental health, with dysregulation implicated in a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Aim: This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the linkage between neurotransmitters and mental health, integrating molecular systems, and clinical perspectives to elucidate their roles in both physiological functioning and psychopathology. Methods: The article employs a comprehensive literature review methodology, drawing on evidence from psychopharmacology, neuroimaging, and genetics to detail the mechanisms of neurotransmitter synthesis, signaling, and their modulation by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Results: The analysis confirms that distinct neurotransmitter systems are central to specific disorders: serotonin and norepinephrine in depression and anxiety; dopamine in schizophrenia, ADHD, and addiction; and the GABA-glutamate balance in anxiety and mood disorders. Furthermore, the review highlights the limitations of monoamine-centric models, emphasizing the therapeutic promise of glutamatergic agents like ketamine and the role of neuroplasticity. Conclusion: Neurotransmitters provide a crucial, though not exclusive, biological basis for mental illness. Effective treatment requires a nuanced, integrative approach that combines pharmacological strategies with psychosocial interventions to restore neurochemical and circuit-level homeostasis
