Innovative Methods for Hydrogen Gas Production, Storage, and Transportation Consideration: A review

This review examines the technical and operational feasibility of transporting hydrogen through existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure, with emphasis on hydrogen blending as a near-term pathway for decarbonizing gas networks. It evaluates key factors influencing blend limits including material compatibility, combustion behavior, safety constraints, and system efficiency while also discussing the role of compression and leak detection technologies in ensuring safe operation. The review further considers conditions under which dedicated hydrogen pipelines may be required and highlights emerging opportunities associated with injecting renewable hydrogen into existing grids. By synthesizing current experimental, modeling, and regulatory findings, the study identifies critical research gaps and outlines the system modifications needed to support wider-scale hydrogen deployment. The analysis indicates that while blending offers a practical transitional strategy, targeted upgrades to infrastructure and operating standards are essential for long-term hydrogen integration.
