Evaluation of Retention of implant retained maxillary complete overdenture opposing Kennedy class I partial denture using ball and socket versus bar and clips attachments.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate retention with implant retained maxillary complete overdenture using Ball and Socket versus bar attachment systems opposing Kennedy class I partially edentulous mandible. Material and Methods: Ten healthy patients with completely edentulous maxilla opposing Kennedy class I partially edentulous mandible were randomly chosen from the removable prosthodontics department clinic, Faculty of Dental Medicine, (Boys, Cairo), Al-Azhar University. For Each patient, a new conventional maxillary complete denture and removable partial denture in the lower arch were constructed. Four dental implants were placed in the canine and premolar areas in the edentulous maxilla using a 3D-printed surgical guide. The conventional maxillary denture was converted into maxillary overdenture, The patients were divided randomly into two groups according to the type of attachment, group I received four implant-supported overdentures with ball and socket attachment while Group II received four implant-supported overdentures with Bar and clip attachment. Retention was measured using a digital force gauge at the time of insertion, after three months, after six months, after nine months, and after twelve months. Result: The results of this study revealed that the retention in group II (bar group) is higher than that in group I (ball group); with the difference considered statistically significant. Conclusion: Within the limitation of this study, it was concluded that bar and clip attachment may be recommended to retain maxillary implant overdenture than ball and socket regarding increasing retention.
