Assessment of maxillary canine retraction using self-ligating brackets system assisted with micro-osteoperforations: a prospective controlled clinical study
Orthodontic treatment is widely sought to enhance dental aesthetics and correct malocclusions, but its prolonged duration presents challenges, including root resorption, cavities, and periodontal risks. To accelerate treatment safely, various techniques have been explored. This study evaluates the efficacy of self-ligating brackets combined with micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) in enhancing orthodontic tooth movement.A prospective split-mouth randomized controlled trial was conducted on eight female patients, divided into two groups in which MOPs were performed either on the maxillary right or left side. Canine retraction was initiated simultaneously on both sides using rectangular stainless-steel wire (16×22 mil) and closed coils delivering 150 gm of force. MOPs were performed monthly for four consecutive months, beginning at the start of retraction. Measurements were taken clinically and with digitized 3D models. Results showed no statistically significant difference in movement between the experimental (with MOPs) and control (without MOPs) sides (P>0.05) throughout most of the study. However, a significant difference was observed in the first month. The study concludes that repeated MOPs with self-ligating brackets do not substantially accelerate maxillary canine retraction in female patients, except during the initial month of space closure.
