Comparison between Tru-Cut biopsy and incisional biopsy for diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial tumors
Objectives: the present study was aimed to evaluate Tru-cut biopsy and incisional biopsy in achieving prompt diagnosis of maxillofacial pathology and to determine the efficacy, safety and accuracy of Tru-cut biopsy and incisional biopsy in diagnosis of maxillofacial pathology.Material and Methods: twenty-two patients with tumors of soft tissue or mixed origins in maxillofacial region which were indicated for being biopsied were included in this clinical study. The patients were selected from those attending the Out-Patients Clinic of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Cairo, Boys and Sayed Galal University Hospital, Al-Azhar University. Results: in the present study, the use of Tru cut needle biopsy technique was effectively time saving and shrink intraoperative time to about one third that time. Regarding to intraoperative bleeding, tru cut needle biopsy has less invasive, this fact has decreasing either intra or postoperative bleeding after biopsy technique. Regarding to postoperative pain, patient of both groups reported mild to moderate pain levels, group II showed higher pain intensity values than group I. All biopsies taken in the present study from both groups were histopathologically adequate (adequacy: 100%) and accuracy for diagnosing of each lesion. Conclusion: Tru cut needle biopsy is considered a valid, simple, accurate and easy technique for biopsy taking in oral and maxillofacial tumor. In addition, tru-cut needle biopsy is not only a less painful technique than conventional incisional biopsy but with lower rates of intra and postoperative complications as well.
