The Dilemma of Forensic Medicine Experts: Post-mortem Examination of Organ-retrieved Brain-dead Donor Case

Abstract The number of organ donations is steadily increasing. Brain-dead donors are the primary source of vital organs. Many of these cases involve complex medico-legal issues requiring thorough investigation and documentation. Forensic medicine experts play a crucial role in determining the cause of death and ensuring that organ retrieval procedures adhere to legal and ethical standards. Organ-retrieved brain-dead donor cases pose dilemmas for forensic medicine experts before, during and after autopsy. Successful organ retrieval, along with establishing the cause of death for legal purposes, can only be achieved through collaborative efforts involving retrieval surgeons, forensic medicine experts and support staff. Developing standardised protocols can streamline operations, enhance efficiency and reduce the potential for errors.
