Customized Silicone Finger Prosthesis – A Case Report

Partial or complete loss of a finger due to trauma, congenital malformation, or disease can result in considerable functional limitations and emotional distress. The inability to perform daily tasks such as grasping, writing, or gesturing may negatively impact the patient’s independence and quality of life. In addition to physical disability, the esthetic disfigurement often leads to low self-esteem and social withdrawal. Prosthetic rehabilitation offers a non-invasive and effective approach to restore both function and appearance. Among available materials, room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone is widely used in maxillofacial and digital prosthetics due to its favorable properties, including flexibility, biocompatibility, and ability to mimic natural skin tone and texture. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a young female patient with an acquired amputation of the right little finger. A customized silicone finger prosthesis was fabricated, utilizing both anatomical vacuum retention and mechanical support through a finger ring. The result was a functionally stable, esthetically pleasing, and psychologically supportive prosthetic restoration. Partial or complete loss of a finger due to trauma, congenital malformation, or disease can result in considerable functional limitations and emotional distress. The inability to perform daily tasks such as grasping, writing, or gesturing may negatively impact the patient’s independence and quality of life.
