Life Care Planning for the Client With Severe Spasticity: Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy
This article reviews the implications of life care planning for clients with severe spasticity. Intervention options are discussed, focusing on an algorithm for use of an intrathecal Baclofen (ITB) pump for individuals who have not responded to other forms of treatment. Client criteria for ITB therapy as well as the screening trial, surgical implantation, post-operative care, and chronic ITB therapy is reviewed. A table outlining areas for consideration in the life care plan is included as well as photographs of an implantable pump device.
