Approximating Coaxial Pulse Forming Line Cables by Rolled Topologies

CERN operates several kilometers of SF6 gas filled coaxial cables. Within the project for SF6 gas free replacements of these 80 kV cables an alternative to conventional extruded cables has been investigated: approximating the coaxial cable by a rolled sandwich construction. This paper outlines the basic design considerations, numerical simulations of the proposed structure and initial laboratory tests results. Parameters affecting the waveform and flat top homogeneity are being assessed and a conceptual design for a small-scale prototype is proposed.

Abstract

CERN operates several kilometers of SF6 gas filled coaxial cables. Within the project for SF6 gas free replacements of these 80 kV cables an alternative to conventional extruded cables has been investigated: approximating the coaxial cable by a rolled sandwich construction. This paper outlines the basic design considerations, numerical simulations of the proposed structure and initial laboratory tests results. Parameters affecting the waveform and flat top homogeneity are being assessed and a conceptual design for a small-scale prototype is proposed.
