A New Solid-State Pulse Generator for the CERN PS Multi Turn Extraction Using an Inductive Adder Topology
The Inductive Adder topology has been intensively studied at CERN and conceptual designs have been developed for the CLIC and FCC projects. The experience and confidence gained with these prototypes enabled the consolidation of the PS Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) kicker pulse generator for the KFA4 system. This work outlines the project's reasons, summarises the functional requirements, and discusses the design choices for a 40 kV, 2.6 kA pulse generator with a <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$2.1 \mu \mathrm{s}$</tex> flat-top length and 86 ns (10% to 90%) system rise time. A conceptual design for the new KFA4 pulse generator is presented, including the magnetic core considerations, layer voltage and switch selection, as well as the insulation requirements. The benefits of the new topology over the legacy system are discussed. The paper concludes on the challenges encountered and the future development focus.
