Design, Manufacturing and Testing of a $115 \text{kV} / 54 ~\mathrm{A}$ Pulse Transformer Assembly for the Fair Plinac

To generate the required antiproton beam intensity for the FAIR PANDA experiment, a dedicated proton LINAC (pLINAC) for the FAIR accelerator chain is being constructed. Klystron modulators are power converters within the high-power RF system of the pLINAC. Here, seven modulator systems with a nominal pulse power amplitude of 115 <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\text{kV} / 54 ~\mathrm{A}$</tex>, an effective pulse width of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$360 \mu ~\mathrm{s}$</tex> and a pulse repetition rate of up to 5 Hz are required. These modulators are to be based on pulse transformers whose characteristics largely determine the modulator output pulse quality. This paper describes system considerations, modeling, design optimization, manufacturing and experimental validation of a high-voltage pulse transformer assembly matching the RF power requirements of the FAIR pLINAC.
