Reading Vers une architecture, Otherwise
A century after Vers une architecture (1923), in October 2024, the workshop Vers une Architecture in Teaching was organised at the gta Archives of ETH Zürich, bringing together archivists, historians, studio professors and students to examine how Le Corbusier’s manifesto still informs—and unsettles—architectural pedagogy. Led by Véronique Bonne, Frederike Lausch, Ciro Miguel, Daniela Ortiz dos Santos and Marta Sequeira, this collaborative work culminated in the curatorial project Vers une Architecture in Teaching—held within the exhibition Vers une Architecture: Reflections, shown at the Pavillon Le Corbusier from 25 April to 23 November 2025, and described in the preceding article. Within the workshop, a series of interviews with contemporary studio professors at ETH Zürich were conducted, inviting them to reflect on their own encounters with Le Corbusier and on the place of Vers une architecture in their teaching. The interviews published here, with Tom Emerson and An Fonteyne, both currently professors at ETH Zürich, offer a glimpse of how Le Corbusier’s book—and Le Corbusier himself—are perceived, read and questioned in architectural education today.
