Evaluating infusion pump integration in a pediatric setting using simulation: A usability and safety assessment
• Pediatric-specific usability testing needed to ensure safe, effective implementation. • Training complexity due to underestimated time and effort of testing . • Enhance adoption with mobile solutions, workflow refinements, and expert engagement. Healthcare simulation offers a controlled setting to evaluate and refine technologies before implementation, ensuring safety, effectiveness, and clinical readiness. This study validated syringe and large-volume pump integration for a brand of pump which had never been used in a large pediatric facility, serving as both a test bed for innovation and a guide for staff training. Experts from six hospital units conducted structured assessments using real-world scenarios. While the pumps met technical integration requirements, challenges arose regarding workflow efficiency, system communication timing, and automation limitations. Findings highlight the need for thorough training, stakeholder engagement, and workflow optimization to ensure successful interoperability implementation.
