Inadvertent Transhepatic Placement of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) Tube

Of 294 patients who had a PEG tube placed and subsequently underwent CT scan of the abdomen, in 20 patients the tube traverses the left lobe of the liver. Only one of these 20 patients had a major complication, indicating the transhepatic PEG is usually well tolerated, and, if detected can be left in place.
