Participatory Knowledge and Open Mapping: The BSLISE Directory and Global LIS Education Mapping

Mapping and connecting Library and Information Science (LIS) education programs worldwide is essential to foster collaboration, promote equity, and enhance the global visibility of the field. However, existing tools often present limitations in scope, standardisation, and accessibility. In response to these challenges, the BSLISE Directory seeks to strengthen the global LIS community through the development of an open directory of LIS education programs worldwide, integrating open-source tools and inviting active contributions from professionals, librarians, educators, and institutions. The objective of this paper is to present the BSLISE Directory, the technical infrastructure to support it and an evaluation of its open infrastructure. The BSLISE Directory’s structure is organised to facilitate interactive knowledge sharing, while community input and careful data curation ensure its reliability and adaptability. Initial analysis highlights regional disparities, underscoring the need for inclusive infrastructures that enhance global visibility. Yet, despite the growing importance of such platforms, there is still a lack of standardised frameworks to evaluate their openness, interoperability, and community relevance. Conceived as a dynamic and evolving resource, it supports international collaboration and aims to enhance visibility within the LIS domain. By promoting openness and participation, the BSLISE Directory reimagines how LIS education is documented and connected globally.
