Stress in the Valve Spring of a Medium-Speed Engine

The strain and stress distribution in turns of a valve spring are determined as a function of the axial force, by means of tensometers (strain gages). The greatest load is found at the extreme working turns of the spring. Fracture of valve springs may be due to the considerable tangential stress in the first working turns.

Abstract

The strain and stress distribution in turns of a valve spring are determined as a function of the axial force, by means of tensometers (strain gages). The greatest load is found at the extreme working turns of the spring. Fracture of valve springs may be due to the considerable tangential stress in the first working turns.
