A Core–Shell Ph-BN@CeO 2 Nanoparticle for Synergistically Enhancing Tribological and Anticorrosion Properties of Ni–W Composite Coatings

Aiming to boost both the wear and corrosion performance of Ni-W coatings at the same time, a novel core-shell structured nanoparticle, Ph-BN@CeO2, was designed and synthesized for use as a reinforcing phase in composite electrodeposition. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheets were initially modified with a polydopamine (PDA) coating to boost their stability and bonding strength. Subsequently, cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles were anchored onto the PDA-coated h-BN (Ph-BN) surface. The structure, wear characteristics, and corrosion behavior of these layers were thoroughly examined. Findings indicated that the Ni-W/Ph-BN@CeO2 layer had an average friction coefficient of 0.233, a 64.54% drop from the plain Ni-W layer. In the electrochemical tests, this composite coating exhibited the highest charge transfer resistance (53,410 Ω·cm2) and the lowest corrosion rate (0.0113 mm/y). The findings provide a viable pathway for developing next-generation protective coatings.
