Implication of survey research in Japan self-advocacy support for college students in Japan with developmental disabilities: a literature review

Purpose Self-advocacy is essential for supporting students with developmental disabilities in Japanese higher education. However, there is a lack of adequate support and research in this area. This study aims to clarify the current state and challenges of self-advocacy support for these students. Design/methodology/approach Utilizing the self-advocacy framework, this study examined the existing conditions and issues related to its main components: knowledge of self, knowledge of rights, communication and leadership (advocating for others). Findings The results showed that, while the significance of promoting self-understanding and communication is well-recognized, there is a significant need to improve rights awareness and its implementation. This study highlights the importance of creating systems and programs that not only raise awareness of rights but also enhance effective self-understanding and communication. Originality/value This study demonstrates the importance of self-advocacy support for students with developmental disabilities in creating an inclusive environment in higher education institutions. At the same time, the study suggested challenges in support measures that take into account the characteristics of developmental disabilities and the cultural specifics of Japan.
