Evaluation of Some Faba Bean Genotypes Under Soil Salinity in Nubaria Region, Egypt

A field experiment was carried out at Nubaria Research Station during winter of 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 growing seasons, to evaluate salt stress tolerant of new faba bean genotypes and analyze the relationship between the yield potential and physiological traits. Nine diverse faba bean genotypes (M4, M6, L1, L5, L6, L13, L16, L17 and L18) and commercial three faba bean cultivars (Nubaria 1, Nubaria 3 and Nubaria 5) were used in this study. Genotypes were arranged in a randomized complete block design with five replicates. Among these genotypes, the Nubaria 3 cultivar recorded the highest average values for the number of branches, seed weight plant–1, seed index, and seed yield ardab fad–1 (ardab = 155 kg, fad= 4200 m2), as well as the highest mean values for crop growth rate of 45–60 days (CGR1), crop growth rate at 60–75 days (CGR2), Shoot/Root ratio, relative water content (RWC %), chlorophyll fluorescence, stomata resistance (SR), transpiration rate (TR) and total chlorophyll (TCH), However, it recorded the lowest mean value for leaf temperature (LT) and K+/Na+ ratio. The M6 genotype had 34.66, 27.17, 34.06, 24.19, 6.12, 11.84, 8.52, 11.35, 63.75 and 8.09 % increase in No. of pods per plant, No of seeds plant–1, seed weight plant–1(g) and seed yield ardab fed–1, CGR1, shoot/root ratio, RWC%, chlorophyll fluorescence, SR and TR criteria, respectively as comparing to Nubaria 3 cultivar. L18 genotype likewise recorded 48.63, 38.02, 13.49, 14.47, 2.55, 3.95, 3.87, 7.09, 38.75 and 0.54 % increase for the pervious characters, respectively when comparing with Nubaria 3 cultivar.
