Dominant Designs: Explaining Standardization in Ecosystems and Sustainability Transitions
Dominant design research is increasingly used to explain phenomena far from the seminal contributions regarding technological innovation. This paper therefore provides an overview of the current state of research and outlines future pathways. The bibliometric analysis reveals that research in dominant design currently centers on the six topics innovation modes, standards competition, industry evolution, technology transitions, ecosystem-based standardization, and sustainability transitions. By highlighting the latter, emergent, topics, we hope to incite new directions for research.
