Optimizing rib design in injection-molded plastic containers for enhanced strength and reduced molding energy consumption
The need for sustainable manufacturing, especially in the plastic injection molding industry, has increased due to the rise in worldwide energy consumption brought on by industrial growth. Sustainable development requires lowering production costs and energy while increasing product quality. By optimizing rib design, this study seeks to increase a transport plastic container's strength-to-weight ratio while maintaining quality and lowering cycle time and manufacturing costs. Furthermore, a novel optimized rib design that combines conventional and diamond-shaped arrangements is suggested. The original design, a diamond-shaped rib design, and an optimized hybrid design were the three container designs that were assessed. A load-carrying capacity assessment was conducted using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Four polyethylene materials were subjected to mold flow and cooling investigations in order to ascertain the necessary injection pressure and cooling energy. While keeping the polymer weight, cost, and cycle time comparable to the original, the optimized container design produced a 1.2-fold improvement in strength.
