Cellulitis in primary care: the role of practice nurses

Cellulitis is a common bacterial skin infection that is frequently encountered in UK primary care settings. Prompt recognition and appropriate first-line treatment are essential to prevent complications and hospital admissions. This article provides an overview of the clinical presentation of cellulitis, current National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines for first-line antibiotic therapy and the pivotal role of practice nurses in assessment, patient education and follow-up care. Emphasis is placed on flucloxacillin as the recommended initial treatment, with alternatives for patients allergic to penicillin. The article also explores differential diagnosis, recurrence prevention and practical strategies for supporting patients in the community. Reflective questions are included to support revalidation.
