Polymethylmethacrylate and polydimethylsiloxane coatings with nano TiO2 and ZnO: Surface property and resistance against drywood termite

The surface characteristics and termite resistance of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) wood coatings combined with nano metallic oxide particles of TiO 2 and ZnO was investigated against the drywood termite Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light (Blattodea: Kalotermitidae). FESEM-EDS, FTIR, contact angle and free surface energy evaluation and measurements were conducted to characterize wood surface coated with the polymer matrix and metal oxide (PDMS/TiO2, PDMS/ZnO, PMMA/TiO 2 and PMMA/ZnO). Results of the study showed that application of PDMS and PMMA coatings resulted in a significant increase in contact angle and hydrophobicity (CA >120°) with reduction in surface free energy (<10 mN/m). Analytical tests confirmed the presence of both polymer matrix and the metallic oxides on the surface of wood specimens. The coating morphology and particle size/dispersion varied with method of application and combination of polymer matrix and metal oxide used. Termite no-choice forced feeding test of wood specimen coated with PMMA or PDMS combined with TiO 2 or ZnO resulted in high termite mortality (>95%) and low weight losses (<0.5%) after a 12-week exposure period. The composite coatings showed good termiticidal activity and effective barrier against C . cyanocephalus . Coating mix used in this study offers a new and innovative way to control drywood termite presenting a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional wood preservatives. Further research is necessary on the use of polymeric coatings and metallic nanoparticles and their role in the development of improved moisture protection and insect resistance treatment. • Drywood termites caused significant structural damage to wood structures worldwide • PMMA and PDMS coatings with TiO 2 or ZnO were fabricated and applied to wood surface • Contact angle measurement indicated hydrophobic and water repellent wood surface • PMMA and PDMS coatings with TiO 2 or ZnO prevented damage by drywood termites • Coating mix offers a new and innovative way to control drywood termites
