Open Storage in Museums and Its Types
Open storage exhibitions were once a tradition in early forms of museums. In the 1970s, the modern concept of open storage emerged, yet there has been no definitive consensus on its concept and forms. This paper provides a preliminary exploration of the origins, definitions, and types of open storage in museums, as well as its significance in modern museums. By analyzing multiple domestic and international cases, it examines various forms of open storage and conducts an in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of four common types. While establishing open storage in museums is highly necessary, the selection of its form should consider the institution's specific conditions, prioritize audience feedback, and emphasize the interpretation of collections to maximize the educational and participatory value of such spaces.
