Introduction to the Geoheritage Special Issue: “Sustainability and Heritage in Natural Stone Industry”

Abstract Sustainable development seeks to ensure human prosperity in balance with nature, emphasizing the responsible use of natural resources. Among these, stone stands out for its enduring contribution to human culture, from tools and art to architecture and monuments. This special issue explores the multifaceted role of natural stone as a geological, technical and cultural asset, emphasizing its symbolic, structural, and aesthetic importance throughout history. By presenting case studies from around the world, the issue illustrates how stone reflects the identity of civilizations and serves as a bridge between geodiversity and cultural heritage. It addresses the sustainability of stone use, the conservation of quarry sites, and the importance of geoscientific communication. Studies also focus on the mechanical and aesthetic properties of stones, their decay processes, and reuse strategies. Highlighting the ongoing work of the IUGS Heritage Stones Subcommission, this collection contributes to the global recognition and protection of heritage stones, promoting their sustainable use and appreciation across scientific, cultural, and societal dimensions.
