Electronic Tattoos for Next Generation Wearable Electronics and Healthcare Applications

Electronic tattoos (e-tattoos) have emerged as a transformative class of next-generation wearable electronics, offering ultrathin, skin-conformal and highly sensitive platforms for real-time health monitoring. The scientific advancements that support e-tattoo technologies are thoroughly reviewed in this paper, which starts with an explanation of their distinct benefits over traditional wearables and the rising need for seamless human–device integration. We examine the fundamental principles and material requirements for fabricating tattoo-like electronics, highlighting the role of soft substrates, biocompatible interfaces, breathable architectures, and functional nanomaterials. Ultrathin, stretchable, and low-impedance e-tattoos are designed for dependable epidermal adhesion and high-quality signal acquisition. This is demonstrated through a thorough examination of important fabrication processes, such as printing, transfer procedures, vacuum deposition, 3D printing, and roll-to-roll manufacturing. Beyond design, this review examines the diverse range of uses made possible by e-tattoos, including biochemical monitoring, sports performance tracking, environmental sensing, soft human-machine interfaces, physiological sensing and wireless health diagnostics. To provide a comprehensive view, key issues like data security, mechanical durability, long-term biocompatibility and thermal management are examined critically, along with new approaches utilizing hybrid device architectures, advanced materials, and enhanced wireless communication techniques.
