Sanat Terimlerinin Tanımlanmasında Farklı Disiplinlerin Etkisi: Oya Örneği
Needlework and lace have been one of the handicrafts that have attracted the most attention of Turkish women. Turkish girls and their mothers, acting with the understanding of “the girl in the cradle and the dowry in the chest”, have not been idle either to meet their daily needs or for dowry purposes. Their efforts contributed to the development of handicrafts such as needlepoint, lace and embroidery and led to the birth of a terminology in this field. In addition to classical needlepoint terms, since needlepoint art has its own secret language, needlepoint terms have been intertwined with folklore elements, and the message that the needlepoint artist wanted to give was effective in the naming of the terms. This situation has made oya terms not only the subject of lexicography but also of nomology, folklore, sociology and other sciences. The aim of this study is to reveal that only the knowledge of the field is not sufficient when defining terms, and that the data of other disciplines should also be utilized in the definition of terms with reference to needlepoint terms. The data of the study consists of the items determined from the term dictionary named “Türkiye Türkçesinde Oya ve Dantel Sanatları ile İlgili Söz Varlığı” and in addition to this, the materials we have compiled from the field for years. As a result of the compilations and scans, it was seen that most of the oya terms are related to social science. It has been reached the opinion that in addition to professional knowled-ge and dictionary knowledge, data on the society in which that art is practiced are also important when making interpretation in term studies.
