Pragmatic markers and Sentiment Analysis: Toward an integrated model of Meaning in Contemporary colloquial Spanish

This paper proposes an integrated approach to the meaning of pragmatic markers in contemporary colloquial Spanish by exploring their levels of sentiment expression. Against the background of the fundamental yet challenging question of how to capture and quantitatively analyse the abstract notion of “meaning”, the study addresses its implications for the analysis of pragmatic markers. In concrete, it aims to provide a more principled way of defining their “meaning” and assessing their functions by conducting a collocational and distributional analysis through sentiment analysis of the text fragments in which they appear. The analysis draws on data from the Corpus Oral del español hablado en Madrid (CORMA) and focusses on an extension of the internal aspects of meaning which cover not only the pragmatic function of these markers, but also their positive, negative, or neutral sentiment associations, as determined by tools like Lingmotif.Overall, the results confirm the potential contribution of automatic sentiment analysis to further operationalize the meaning of pragmatic markers. Moreover, the findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of the role of these linguistic units in expressing sentiment, identity, and interactional dynamics in colloquial Spanish --------------------------------------------------------------------- Este artigo propõe uma abordagem integrada ao significado dos marcadores pragmáticos no espanhol coloquial contemporâneo, explorando seus níveis de expressão de sentimento. Partindo da questão fundamental – e ao mesmo tempo desafiadora – de como captar e analisar quantitativamente a noção abstrata de “significado”, o estudo discute as implicações significativas dessa questão para a análise dos marcadores pragmáticos. Mais concretamente, busca-se oferecer uma forma mais fundamentada de definir o significado desses elementos por meio de uma análise colocacional e distribucional, avaliando suas funções a partir da análise de sentimento dos trechos textuais em que aparecem. A análise baseia-se em dados do Corpus Oral del español hablado en Madrid (CORMA) e concentra-se em uma ampliação dos aspectos internos do significado, que abrangem não apenas a função pragmática dos marcadores, mas também suas associações afetivas – positivas, negativas ou neutras – conforme identificadas por ferramentas como o Lingmotif. De modo geral, os resultados confirmam o potencial da análise automática de sentimentos como recurso para estabelecer tais critérios. Além disso, os achados desta pesquisa contribuem para uma melhor compreensão do papel dos marcadores pragmáticos na expressão de sentimentos, identidade e dinâmicas interacionais no espanhol coloquial.
