Study on the Friction, Wear, and Anti-Seizure Properties of Fe-Ni-Co Electroplated Coating Used on Crankshaft Surface

Abstract Electroplated alloy coatings with high bond strength and better wear resistance are widely used in automotive, aerospace, and heavy machinery sectors. In this study, a micro-reticulated Fe-Ni-Co alloy coating was investigated as a surface material for crankshafts. Component-level evaluations comprising wear resistance and seizure resistance tests were conducted on a wear tester. The results demonstrated that the electroplated shaft reduced the bearing wear mass by 49% and extended the seizure time by 157% compared to the conventional quenched shaft. The micro-reticulated structure on the surface of the electroplated shaft can store lubricant, which enhances microfluidic lubrication during the wear test. Meanwhile, the higher pressure and nanocrystalline iron result in the formation of more tribofilms on the surface of the electroplated shaft. During the seizure test, the stored lubricant is progressively released after oil supply interruption, thereby improving seizure resistance through sustained lubrication. These findings can provide guidance for material selection and surface processing of diesel engine crankshafts.
