Unveiling the Versatility of Borophene for Sustainable Technological Innovations: A Review
Borophene, a 2D material composed of boron atoms, is emerging as a groundbreaking material with the potential to revolutionize advanced materials, potentially even replacing graphene. This review offers an in-depth analysis of borophene, covering its synthesis methods, properties, and diverse applications. Both substrate-supported and freestanding synthesis techniques are discussed, with a particular focus on advancing methods for creating freestanding borophene. Computational studies highlight borophene’s exceptional strength, flexibility, and electronic properties, positioning it as a formidable alternative to graphene. Bridging the gap between theoretical predictions and experimental data is crucial for fully realizing borophene’s potential. The review also explores borophene’s promising applications in hydrogen storage, sensor technology, biomedical fields, and electrocatalysis, encompassing vital reactions like the oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, water splitting, and CO2 reduction. Additionally, borophene’s role in batteries and supercapacitors underscores its versatility across multiple technologies. With these distinctive properties, borophene shows strong potential to make significant contributions to material chemistry, positioning it as an innovative material with a wide range of applications across emerging technologies.
