Abstract: An eventful year characterized by much instability, 2024 saw France governed by four different Prime ministers, including one who was named after snap legislative elections and ousted when he lost a confidence vote in the Assemblée nationale . Social unrest (farmers' protests, riots in New Caledonia) and two high-profile trials, one involving mass rape, the other connected to the 2020 killing and beheading of teacher Samuel Paty, contributed to a heavy atmosphere in the country. However, France also drew positive attention from the rest of the world, successfully hosting the summer Olympic Games and completing the rebuilding of the Notre-Dame cathedral.
