M. Taha Boyalık, Tefsirde Kesinlik Söyleminin Eleştirisi ve Tefsir-Tevil Ayırımının Yeniden Yapılandırılması

Two of the most fundamental concepts in ‘ilm al-tafsīr are tafsīr and ta’wīl. Their significance arises from their role in delineating the nature of ‘ilm al-tafsīr and in shaping the interpretation process within this discipline in various ways. From a theoretical perspective, discussions on the essence and nature of ‘ilm al-tafsīr, and more specifically, academic debates and research concerning the tafsīr-ta’wīl distinction, have generated a particularly extensive body of literature in Turkish. A recent contribution to this body of scholarship is the article titled "Critique of the Discourse of Certainty in Tafsīr and the Reconstruction of the Tafsīr-Ta’wīl Distinction" (İslam Araştırmaları Dergisi, no. 53 [January 2025]: 117-54). As the title suggests, the author, M. Taha Boyalık, critically examines the discourse of certainty in tafsīr. This study aims to evaluate the author's key arguments and claims that invite further discussion, thereby contributing to ongoing research and debates in this area. The article is structured around the following key themes: a) al-Māturīdī’s views on tafsīr and ta’wīl, b) the distinction between tafsīr and ta’wīl based on the riwāyah-dirāyah classification, c) the issue of certainty in tafsīr, and d) the proposed new distinction between tafsīr and ta’wīl.
