Performance of reinforced‐steel fiber reinforced concrete beams adjacent to column connections under reverse cyclic loading

Abstract This study examines the performance of reinforced steel fiber reinforced concrete (R‐SFRC) beams entering column connections and subjected to reverse cyclic loading located in regions of low seismicity and with a focus on ductility. Large‐scale experimental tests were conducted to evaluate the potential of steel fibers to partially or fully replace shear ligatures in critical zones near connections. The beams incorporated conventional bar reinforcement ratios of 0.0086 for the top (negative moment) reinforcement and 0.0055 for the bottom (positive moment) reinforcement, with the bars continuing through the joint. Fiber dosages of 0.4% and 0.8% of 5D fibers were used. The results showed that conventional transverse reinforcement in congested shear‐critical zones adjacent to connections can be effectively replaced by dispersed double‐hooked steel fibers without compromising bending moment capacity, ductility, or energy dissipation. Plastic hinges developed near the connections were capable of sustaining significant rotations without a reduction in moment capacity. The study concludes that, with a longitudinal bar reinforcement ratio exceeding 0.0055, up to 30 per cent moment redistribution is feasible in the design of R‐SFRC frames, continuous beams, and slabs incorporating moderate dosages of 5D steel fibers.
